A filipino trainee was killed and four other workers seriously injured in an explosion on a tanker under construction at the Nakatani Zosen shipyard in western Japan.



The blast occurred around 8.30 am local time on the 4 November when welders were working on the 499-tonne chemical tanker Enshu-maru moored in the harbour of Nomi town, some 700 kilometres west of Tokyo.



They were cutting metal plates near to the engine room with blowtorches just before the explosion. There did not appear to be any chemical materials inside the ship.



A Nakatani company official identified the dead man as Anthony Bulan Batilarran, 28.
