First full-electric SOV project announced in London

An international consortium including Shell, Kongsberg and DNV announced it will work together to build the world’s first electric offshore Service Operation Vessel (eSOV) on 11 September 2023. The consortium also includes UK-based shipping firm Bibby Marine, the Port of Aberdeen and Liverpool John Moores University.

The eSOV design features a 20MWh capacity energy storage system (ESS) and an onshore power connection. The vessel is expected to operate fully on electric power but will have dual-fuel methanol engines installed for back up.
