During the 19 years of his career in the ship classification society, he has performed all kind of measurements during newbuilding sea trials and has attended more than 200 sea trials world‑wide. The main item of his experience is speed trials and he joined the according expert group that worked out ISO 15016:2015.

He is involved in the EEDI verification by approval work, surveys, and training of surveyors since the beginning in 2013. During MEPC.74, 75 and 76 he advised the German delegation on EEDI related topics, especially power limitation and consideration of energy efficiency technologies.

Jan works on the calculation and evaluation of the energy efficiency of ships according to different standards and references. Since 2020, he deals with the introduction of IMO measures to reduce GHG emission of the existing fleet, including the development and implementation of EEXI related services at DNV.

His background are academic studies in physics and a thesis in coastal engineering covering work in a wave channel and analysis of slamming events.
