Maersk expands fleet with LNG orders

Shipping behemoth A.P. Moller-Maersk is investing heavily in fleet renewal, with plans to acquire up to 60 vessels capable of operating on multiple fuel types including LNG. The order, comprising both owned and chartered ships, represents a significant capacity increase of 800,000 TEU.

While the new vessels will be equipped to run on LNG, Maersk has emphasised that this is not the primary fuel strategy. The company is actively pursuing bio-LNG as a cleaner alternative and is also considering methanol as a potential fuel source.

“We cannot afford to put all our eggs in one basket when it comes to decarbonization,” said Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc. “The energy transition is complex, and we expect a range of technologies to compete for dominance in the coming years.”
