The new innovative range of hydraulic couplings developed by Wärtsilä represents a new generation technology that offers considerable advantages over conventional coupling solutions.
The overriding feature of the Wärtsilä solution is the new, specially developed, high friction treatment that has been applied to the coupling. The new surface treatment of the sleeve’s inner surface increases the friction coefficient from 0.14 to 0.30. This enables problems related to delamination and bonding to the base material, which are typical with treatments based on carbide coatings, to be avoided. Because of this, the high friction couplings developed by Wärtsilä are more resistant to surface damage being caused during installation and operation which can happen with conventional alternative solutions.
The Wärtsilä technology increases the torque transmission capacity, thereby enabling cost savings in the shaft line assembly, since costly reinforcement sleeves and large connection couplings can be substituted with more compact solutions. With the new Wärtsilä high friction couplings, an increase of more than 27.5% in the torque has been achieved, while the weight compared to earlier models has been reduced by more than 29%. In order to suit all types of vessel, the Wärtsilä high friction couplings are available in a broad range of sizes.
The coupling assembly comes ready to install, while the sealing system is designed to make the installation and possible removal both simple and clean. Distance rings between the shafts are not required since the design allows a greater distance as standard. Providing that proper maintenance is performed in line with Wärtsilä’s recommendations, there should be no need for costly component replacements during the entire lifecycle of the installation.
As with all Wärtsilä development activities, the latest methods and tools have been used in bringing this latest innovation to the market. 3D and FEM software has been utilised to ensure the most advanced and reliable outcome. The design has been carefully engineered to deliver not only the best and most reliable operational performance, but also the most practical serviceability with an extended life span.
Since applications and ship types vary, the engineering can be made on a case-by-case basis to meet specific customer requirements, particularly in Navy and Commercial applications. Furthermore, customisation of the solution can be delivered in as little as ten days, along with classification society approval. The design is approved by all classification societies, including DNV-GL, Lloyds Register (LR), Bureau Veritas (BV), and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
This Wärtsilä coupling solution is already improving and managing torque transmission on a number of vessels around the world for some of the industry’s leading operators as well as shipyards in China, France, Germany and England have experienced the installation advantages that it offers.
