No Propulsion and Future Fuels conference would be complete without wind propulsion, and this year’s conference, from 19-21 November, is no exception.

Session 6.2 offers all the latest on design, standards, research and implementation in the wind propulsion sector.

Moderated by Gavin Allwright, Secretary General of the International Wind Ship Assocation (IWSA) the session will feature a presentation on “Taking fuel savings to the next level with integrated wind solutions” by Oskar Levander, VP Strategy & Business Development Integration & Energy at Kongsberg Maritime. It will focus on a holistic approach to wind assisted vessel design, covering integration of wind propulsion with machinery and other energy saving measures and introducing a novel bulker concept that will deliver fuel savings of 40-50%.

Hasso Hoffmeister, Senior Principle Engineer, DNV will focus on “Wind assisted propulsion systems; class perspective and class services”, introducing delegates into the world of WAPS and answering the questions “What are the classification standards and rules that are setting the stage for a new age of wind?”

Delegates will also hear updates from Alfred Rapaport of Oceanbird, the company developing wind propulsion systems (rigid wing sails) for shipping and from Mia Elg of Deltamarin .

In 2021 Alfa Laval and Wallenius founded Oceanbird to reduce the carbon footprint of the marine industry. Alfred Rapaport has, for the last three years, overseen performance predictions at Oceanbird  His areas of expertise also include stability and maneuverability analysis. His latest insights into the developments at the company will be valuable for all.

Mia Elg has 17 years of experience with various ship energy efficiency and machinery design related tasks. Mia has a master’s degree in Thermodynamics and her current role is as R&D manager at Deltamarin. Her areas of expertise include thermal engineering, product development and productization of different energy- and environmental services, energy balance calculation, energy flow simulation and environmental impact assessment. In addition to this, she has led the development of zero emission ship machinery in several projects.
